Main things to know

Getting to know your machine

Important safety instructions

When using an electrical appliance, basic safety precautions should always be followed, including the ones below. Read all the instructions before using this machine.

Keep these instructions somewhere handy, close to the machine, and pass them on if the machine is ever given to someone else.

This machine can be used by children aged 8 and over, and by people with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or without experience and knowledge, if they are supervised or have been shown how to use it safely and understand the hazards involved. Children must not play with the machine. Cleaning and user maintenance must not be done by children without supervision.

DANGER - to reduce the risk of electric shock

  • Never leave the machine unattended while it is plugged in. The socket it is plugged into should be easy to reach. Always unplug the machine straight after use, and before cleaning, removing covers, oiling or making any other adjustment mentioned in this manual.

WARNING - to reduce the risk of burns, fire, electric shock or injury

  1. Do not let the machine be used as a toy. Take close care when it is used by or near children.
  2. Only use the machine for its intended purpose, as described in this manual. Only use attachments recommended by the manufacturer, as listed in this manual.
  3. Never use the machine if the cord or plug is damaged, if it is not working properly, or if it has been dropped, damaged or dropped into water. Take it to your nearest authorised dealer or service centre to be examined, repaired or adjusted, electrically or mechanically.
  4. Never use the machine with any of its air openings blocked. Keep the ventilation openings of the machine and the foot control free from lint, dust and loose cloth.
  5. Keep your fingers away from all moving parts. Take special care around the needles.
  6. Always use the correct needle plate. The wrong plate can cause the needle to break.
  7. Do not use bent needles.
  8. Do not pull or push the fabric while sewing. It can bend the needle and make it break.
  9. Wear safety glasses.
  10. Turn the power switch to O (off) when making any adjustments in the needle area - threading, changing a needle, changing the presser foot and so on.
  11. Never drop or insert any object into any opening.
  12. Do not use outdoors.
  13. Do not use where aerosol (spray) products are being used or where oxygen is being given.
  14. To disconnect, turn all controls to off (O), then take the plug out of the socket.
  15. Do not unplug by pulling the cord. Hold the plug, not the cord.
  16. The foot control is used to run the machine. Never put anything else on the foot control.
  17. Do not use the machine if it is wet.
  18. If the LED light is damaged or broken, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or a similarly qualified person, to avoid a hazard.
  19. If the cord connected to the foot control is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or a similarly qualified person, to avoid a hazard.
  20. Only use the foot control supplied with the machine, or one supplied by an approved SINGER retailer.
  21. Overlockers: never use the machine unless the cutter cover is securely in place.
NoteThis overlocker is for household use. Please keep these instructions. This manual can be printed.

Connecting the foot control and power

Before plugging in, check the voltage matches the one shown on the plate under the machine.

  1. Connect the foot control/power cord to the socket on the machine.
  2. Plug the power cord plug into the wall socket.
  3. Push the power switch to "-" to turn the machine on.
  4. Press the foot control to start sewing. The harder you press, the faster the machine sews. To stop, take your foot off the foot control.
  5. Push the power switch to O to turn the machine off.
NoteWhen the front cover is open, a safety switch stops the machine sewing, even if you press the foot control.
NoteYour overlocker is set up to give the best stitches at normal room temperature - very hot or cold temperatures can affect the result.
Safety
  • Only use the foot control supplied with the machine, or one supplied by an approved SINGER retailer.
  • If you are unsure how to connect the machine to the power, ask a qualified electrician.

Setting up

Thread stand, front cover and flat bed extension

Telescopic thread stand

Pull the telescopic thread stand up to its full height, then turn it until it clicks into place. Put the thread spools or cones over the cone holders on the spool pins. If the machine is already threaded, straighten the threads so they don't tangle.

Front cover

  • To open: push the cover to the right as far as it will go, then pull it down towards you.
  • To close: lift the cover up, then slide it to the left until it locks.
NoteThe front cover has a safety switch - the machine will not sew while it is open.

Flat bed extension and free arm

Slide off the flat bed extension and the machine becomes a free arm machine, which makes it easier to sew small items and hard to reach areas such as armholes and trouser cuffs.

  • To remove it: press and hold button (A) on the underside, slide the panel to the left and take it off.
  • To put it back: line up the projection on the flat bed extension with the groove on the back of the free arm, and slide it to the right until it snaps into place.
